Review: Black Swan
Black Swan

First of all I should probably talk about my expectations of the film as they weighed my view quite heavily. I went in expecting the completely wrong movie, I though that Black Swan was a psychological horror/supernatural type film and realised that this was not the case. That might be why I wasn’t really a big fan of the film, or maybe I wouldn’t have enjoyed it even if I hadn’t had such a weird idea of what the film would be.
Natalie Portman was really good throughout and played her part really well. Her performance was engaging and very good to watch. The story was fair enough, aspiring Ballet dancer wants the lead role. Gets it but is now frightened someone will take it from her. But there are also other weird things going on in her mind that make her thoughts more visible and interesting. These little weird things make the story a little more interesting than your ordinary struggling [insert person of some profession here] films that you see so much of.
Although the film was not supernatural there were plenty of little horror movie-esque sequences that helped to break up the emotional sequences and the dancing. I know nothing about ballet so I can’t really comment on the dance sequences, but they looked quite good to me.
There was quite a lot on offer from Black Swan including the lesbian scene (I’m assuming everyone already knows about it). There were one or two funny moments one time I almost burst out laughing but no one else in the cinema laughed until 5 seconds later… Could have been embarrassing.
Overall I think that Black Swan just wasn’t for me. It was quite fresh and had a lot of nice ideas but I just didn’t enjoy it. Everyone else I was with enjoyed it, I should probably put links to their reviews somewhere…
