    Miller’s Crossing

The Coen Brother’s are two of my favourite directors and writers. I’ve liked all the films of theirs that I’ve seen and have high expectations for any film of theirs. Miller’s Crossing followed these same rules. I knew it was a gangster film and it was by the Coen Brother’s, which was all the incentive that I needed to watch it.

Miller’s Crossing was really interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There were parts that I feel went on a bit and the story seemed a little watery and strange, but sometimes that’s just the way Coen Brother’s films go.

The cinematics and general shooting were lovely and the title sequence with a hat being blown around a forest is simple and beautiful. I probably need to look into the deeper meanings of the film as I felt kind of lost as to where the plot went. The tone of the whole film was good and the film was kept interesting, but don’t expect a thrilling action packed film like some of the more recent mafia movies. There were a few scenes that were unexpectedly hilarious but there’s not that much joviality through the film. There was quite a lot of violence and gore which I was surprised at even though I’ve seen No Country For Old Men and it’s a film about organised crime.

The casting was great and featured quite a few Coen Brother regulars like John Turturro and Steve Buscemi. I think that’s the main thing I like about Coen Brother’s films, they always create really intriguing, well-developed characters.

Plot twists and people “playing” each other is always what keeps films about gangland America interesting and thought provoking and Miller’s Crossing provides enough of this for any fan of these types of crime film.

I’m not sure what it was that I felt was missing from the film but I just felt there was. Maybe I won’t feel that way if I were to watch it again but I’m just not entirely sure how I feel about the film as whole.
If you like other Coen Brother’s films I highly recommend it and if you just want an interesting film about organised crime I don’t see what would go wrong with seeing it.

    Miller’s Crossing 4/5
