  1. Review: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

I’ve been a Star Trek fan for years now. I was introduced to it quite young every dinner time. I think my first Captain was John Luc Picard, and The Next Generation is still one of my favourite TV series to this date. The most common battle between Star Trek fans, apart from if it’s better than Star Wars is whether the Original Series is better than The Next Generation. It’s hard to pick between the two as they are both amazing, in my opinion. I think The Original series eeks out a bit above The Next Generation just for the craziness and Captain Kirk, but I love The Next Generation almost if not just as much as the Original Series

Right, with that out the way I can go on to review The Wrath of Khan. Star Trek 2 is one of the fan favourites and is definitely in my top 3 of the 11 films based around Star Trek. My favourite is Star Trek 11 but half the stuff I loved from it were call backs to The Wrath of Khan.

Captain James T Kirk and his loyal crew of Spock, Scotty, Bones, Sulu and others helm the Enterprise in this film and they work so well together just like they do in the series. Star Trek II is based some time after the series but the great relationships between the crew still stand, keeping the film entertaining and serious at the same time.

William Shatner is often parodied in popular culture but I still love him as Captain Kirk. He’s not the best actor out there but he plays Captain Kirk so well even if he does have his iffy moments.

Khan is the main villain in the film (almost called it an episode) and has a vendetta with Captain Kirk as he was left stranded on a planet that’s ecosystem was destroy when a bordering planet exploded 6 months after Khan was exiled there. Khan is a great character whose anger towards Kirk causes him to act against his: “far superior intellect” - as he refers to himself throughout the film.

The Wrath of Khan is just as great as any episode of the Original Series of Star Trek and any Trekkie will love it. There are so many great ideas throughout the film and it reminds me why I love Star Trek so much as it was so far ahead of it’s time and it still entertaining and interesting 45 years after the first series was released.

I loved Wrath of Khan and I’m probably going to try and get Search for Spock to watch as soon as I can.

The Wrath of Khan - 4/5
