Review: True Grit
11 Feb
The Coen Brothers have still yet to fail me. True Grit was another film that I was not at all disappointed with and came out really happy with it. I have not seen the 1969 True Grit in its entirety so I don’t feel that I can REALLY compare them, but I really enjoyed what I saw of the 1969 True Grit and like it as much as the Coen Brother’s.
Jeff Bridges was, just awesome as he always is. He played Rooster really really well and it’s really great to see him out of the whole ‘The Dude’ character that he seems to be stuck with in a lot of films. Matt Damon was great as the Texas Ranger and I liked the little subtle change in his voice when he almost bit his tongue off.
Hallie Steinfeld did a really good job as the female lead. She just made Mattie Rose really believable and I just really like the Mattie Rose character. She’s young but she’s knows her business and even frightens a clerk with her very good bargaining skills.
It’s only just hit me that I really enjoy things based in the Wild West and I really need to start watching more Clint Eastwood films and probably some Sergio Leone westerns. Thee’s just something about the weapons, the attire, the slang and most things associated with the Wild West that I really seem to enjoy.
True Grit: 4.5/5
Side-note: I cracked a quick little joke THE second the Paramount Logo came up: “Not as good as the original” which wasn’t particularly funny but made me laugh, which was bad as there was no music… I had to stifle my laughter and try so hard not to laugh for several minutes. It didn’t help that my friend Steven Sloss was laughing, probably at me. I couldn’t get into the film for a little while after that outburst. Was quite embarrassing.
